Work Experience
Teaching Placement
2010-Present: I am currently working at two Schools in the city of Shenyang in Liaoning Province in North East China; at the Dong Bei (North East) Yucai School, working at the primary campus and high school campus, where I am currently working towards obtaining a TEFL Certificate. I undertake 22 classes of 40 minutes each per week teaching from a range of 5 year olds to 6 year olds.
School Volunteer Experience
2008, During my holidays whilst at university I helped work at a summer camp at an International school in England. These duties included the setting up of a range of activities and games to help keep the children motivated and happy during their holidays, whilst their parents were still at work. I have also worked at Universities helping to organise fundraising events and ceremonies. These jobs have helped me to learn a lot about the school culture from a teacher’s aspect as I have aspirations to be a high school teacher.
Skills, Qualifications and Awards I have a Duke of Edinburgh award which is given for leadership skills as well as resilience in which tasks such as working for Charities and going on treks are undertaken over a period of six months.
I have also won medals for winning tournaments in rugby matches.
Computing I am a competent user of Windows and the internet, including all the associated software.
Interests I’m a keen sports follower as well as different aspects of culture including foreign films and literature. I have also been trying to learn Mandarin which, although challenging, I feel I’m beginning to understand the basics, which I hope to improve upon.

Personal Statement Hello, my name is Thomas Bartlett and I’m a 23 year old graduate currently teaching at a prestigious primary and middle school in Shenyang. My family home is in a county called Surrey, which is just south of London and so English is my native language. When I was 18 I lived in Oxford for three years where I gained a 2:1 BA honours studying Business and film with Business being my major, at Oxford Brookes University. After graduation I spent a year working in various jobs, including a summer camp for an International school. Since September 2009, I have been travelling the world on my own, starting with New Zealand then Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and now finally China. I’ve been gone for eight months and I’ve not once felt home sick, so I won’t feel the need to leave through a semester. In fact, I’ve very much enjoyed my stay in China and feel I have adapted very well to the change in culture from what I’m used to. So much so I am currently taking Mandarin lessons to help improve my communications with the locals and I hope to carry this on further. I very much hope to carry on with teaching in China and so far it has been a joy. I’m an enthusiastic person as well as thoughtful and I think these are some of the qualities I could bring with me to your school. |
