June 2009-May 2010
As an English Teacher I have contributed to the delivery of topics in General English classes, ranging from Pre-Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate levels. These classes provided students with a safe and fun environment in which to practice their use of English as a second language.
I have taught various mixed nationality classes, with some classes having up to eight or nine nationalities represented.
In these situations students have been encouraged to work with classmates from different cultural backgrounds in order to challenge themselves to speak English only. Through this student centred form of teaching, I have gained experience in breaching cultural gaps with the goal of encouraging students to work effectively together and learn from each other.
I successfully led a class of 12 students in the isolated Aboriginal community of Mulan.
Mulan is located approx 1,000 km west of Broome, Western Australia and has a population of about 150 people.
I taught a multi-grade 4-7 class in a school that supports a maximum of forty pupils.
Because of cultural issues, lesson plans were directed to creating goals such as motivating students, helping them to focus and organizing information for ease of understanding and remembering. I successfully framed the goals in terms that were relevant to their cultural circumstances.
The class varied in ability from students who were non-readers to those who could read and write at a grade three level. Tailoring the learning process was essential in engaging the students’ interest.
As an English language teacher I took conversational classes with students from grade 1 to 6, with an average of 25 students per class. In addition to normal English lessons, I took “interest” classes for students who wanted to extend themselves. These lessons were planned in my own time using a variety of resources. The idea of these lessons was to improve students’ spoken English skills and this was implemented using a variety of strategies such as role play, group work and paired work.

My final year prac was completed at a co-educational school of 700 students. It was a multicultural school with a large Asian, Samoan and Indian representation. I successfully led a class of 25 students into stipulated curriculum outline. I used modern practices such as interactive whiteboard to introduce students to different curriculum areas. The class was very multi-cultural and also included two special needs students and one Korean exchange student. This was a great experience for me as it challenged me to work with a diverse range of students and take into account the various learning needs of each person in the class.

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS AND INTERESTS
I have a particular interest in teaching students who’s second language is English, as I have studied and worked in this area. I also enjoy working one on one with students from ethnic backgrounds and have tutored a number of students from Africa. My personal interests include music (piano, guitar and singing in a choir), as well as arts and craft.
SUPPORTING STATEMENT
I am a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Education, trained to teach primary school children. I have a passion for educating children and enjoy being in the classroom where I can witness their growth and foster in them a love of learning. My previous work experience as a Nanny enabled me to develop an understanding of how children best learn and my school experiences have given me an appreciation for the diversity there is in children’s abilities and learning styles. In addition to my duties as a nanny, my work as an English language teacher in China has given me an appreciation and understanding of other languages and cultures.
Working as a tutor to migrant learners has also confirmed to me that working with ESL students is an area that I would love to work in, as I am passionate in helping students to overcome the challenges they face. All of these experiences, as well as my most recent work as support worker have helped to shape me into a caring, compassionate and enthusiastic person who would be an asset to any school or organization.
