Qualifications:
· Michigan Technological University (MTU) in Houghton, Michigan, U.S.A. B.S. Biomedical Engineering, B.S. Electrical Engineering
Graduated in December of 2007
· No TEFL or TESOL certificate at this time. Once gainfully employed, I am willing to enroll in classes to obtain certification to further my teaching credentials
Previous Experience:
Mathematics Learning Center (Spring 2003 - Spring 2006)
· Worked every day in the university math center helping tutor students who were having difficulties understanding class lessons
· Worked evening shift walk-in hours to assist people having difficulty with their homework
· Tutoring involved being able to explain mathematics reasoning to students of different capabilities to help students understand and overcome their problems
· I had students use old fashion methods and limited calculator usage thereby allowing students to better understand and solve problems
· My responsibilities included being prompt and scheduling tutoring sessions throughout the day around my class schedule
· Some sessions consisted of tutoring a group of 3-4 students for one hour
· At the start of a new semester, we had to interview and role play with potential candidates for new job positions and use an elimination process to find the best candidates for the job
· I worked in the learning center for three years upon which I resigned to pursue my study abroad experience in Italy
English Language and Cultural Exchange Homestay (Summer 2007)
· I lived in Beijing, China for 3 months with a family to help improve the daughter and mother's conversational English
· English conversations would take place over dinner and into the evening, also on weekends when the whole family would be together
· I helped the daughter to improve her test taking skills for an English proficiency test (TOEFL) needed to study abroad at a university by explaining and having her practice different sections of the test and what the test organizer were looking for in essays and short answer questions
· The mother of the family organized private English lessons with a group of 4-5 older Chinese who wished to improve their basic English for traveling abroad to visit friends and family, on a weekly basis
English Cafe (Summer 2007)
· I worked in an English cafe, giving lessons on proper business English and etiquette to young adults in Beijing, China
· Class sizes were 20-30 people, using a chalkboard to help facilitate the teaching
· After class sessions, I would talk individually or in small groups with the students
· I worked for only a couple weeks due to prior family obligations (see previous work experience)
· Had I worked longer at the cafe, I would have tailored the class sessions around what made English conversation interesting and meaningful to the students because student input and enthusiasm is duly important when it comes to teaching |
