  Work Experience

During my second year at Selby College, I applied for a job at a bowling alley which was opening in the coming months. I was successful in my application and enjoyed working there for nearly three years. I started off as a Quasar Marshall being trained in customer care, bar work and electronic games maintenance. After my first year in the company, I was promoted to two new positions, Quasar Technician (being the only person in the North of England qualified to this level) and bowling technician. I took both roles in my stride and quickly learnt the new skills required. Positively marketing the Quasar and bowling alley alike, I helped to bring in key revenue for this starting business.

English Village Salads, Selby, England (January 2008 – April 2008)

Picking and sorting of fresh produce for consumption. Hard work and good job satisfaction. Taught me the importance of really hard work.

Yuncheng English Village, Shanxi, China (September 2008 – January 2009)

Studied and worked as an intern for this English teaching agency for 6 months and enjoyed every moment of it! The job was hard work and very intimidating at first as the job involved standing in front of 120 children and adults at a time and trying to teach them English from scratch, but after a few months I began to notice how much they were improving and I discovered the real meaning of being a teacher. The job satisfaction of being able to see a student change from speaking no English to being able to converse easily in a few months felt incredible.

TOP International English, Heilongjiang, China (February 2009 – July 2009)

Further studied teaching methodology as part of a private English teaching school. I found this work just as challenging as the last, but in so many different ways. Being introduced to teaching smaller classes in a more individual style and teaching children as young as four years old.

Bincai English College, Heilongjiang, China (August 2009-August 2010)

Teaching 5-1 and 1-on-1 classes for many different levels of student, as well as English Corners, Free Talks, Conversation and Pronunciation classes in a small but very busy school catering to teenagers and adults, with students aging 14-65.

This school has helped me grow as a teacher more than any other, allowing me to develop my own classes and giving me plenty of new opportunities to teach things such as TOEFL, IELTS and many VIP/1-on-1 classes. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at this school and feel it has helped me develop many of my working skills too, such as lesson planning, better catering to students’ needs and levels and learning to understand many of the students more common problems in learning and studying English.

Life Experience

Born in Gosport, Hampshire on the 5th of March 1986, to parents Karen and Barrie. Lived in Gosport and taught at Leesland Infant and Junior schools until I was 9 years old, when my family was moved to Naples, Italy due to my fathers career in the Royal Navy. I then attended school at the British Forces School in Naples, attaining high scores in SAT’s testing at the end of year 6. After this I had to attend boarding school in Britain due to lack of good English-speaking schools available in Naples. Whilst living in Naples I picked up a flair for languages at a young age, learning basic Italian through private lessons with a local resident and taking an interest in the Roman era, and the history of the area, specifically Pompeii and Ercolano. During my time in Italy, I took every opportunity available to me to take part in activities, such as RSA sailing qualifications, rock climbing, canoeing, scuba diving and cliff-jumping. All these have led to a love of thrill-seeking and water sports.

Boarding school opened up many new doors for me, with unlimited access to ICT resources, sports facilities and educational resources. I joined the Combined Cadet Force in my third year, achieving good grades in all my tests and eventually being placed in command of my own unit (RA Signals with a total of 49 members) in the fourth and fifth years. During my time at the school, I enjoyed many sports activities and became a good swimmer and a competent cyclist. I was also a member of the U13/14/15’s C’s Rugby and Football Teams. I attended extra classes for many subjects and advanced my studies in every way possible.

During this time, I also felt a need to develop myself personally and so lived and studied in Hong Kong, Germany, Thailand and a few other countries during my holidays. In each country, I would always try to study as much of the language as possible, experience the culture and become accustomed to a new way of life.

After my GCSE’s, I felt that I’d spent too much time away from my family and decided to leave boarding school and move back home, which by now was Selby in North Yorkshire, where my father grew up. I attended Selby College to study for my A-Levels and made many friends whilst studying. I took a passive role in the college’s Student Union helping to promote and raise money for charity, helping to organize college events such as the Leavers Ball and trips to Alton Towers and more. Due to this warm and friendly environment, I decided to stay on at Selby College to study for the CertEd in e-Business.

After college and finishing my studies as far as I thought was suitable, I decided to carry on working full time. Then after a year or so more, decided to do something a little different with my life and chose to study Gong Fu in the North of China for a year. I studied for around 4 months before taking an internship to teach English. I enjoyed it so much that I have now been working in China full time as an English teacher for 2 years.
