Work Experience
January 2002: I was a waitress to Villa Italia, an Italian Restaurant. I independently organized the selling of certain foods from the restaurant on the beach, which brought in a considerable income for their business.
May 2003: I worked part-time at Hillview International Primary School in Malawi. I was responsible for assisting teachers in different subjects and supervising classes when the teacher was not present. I also helped co-ordinate the toddler sports day.
September 2005: Hillview International Primary School requested my employment again after the month in May 2003. I worked at Hillview for two terms, from September 2005 until December 2005. I was asked to be the official Reception assistant teacher. However I also helped with assisting the acting Head Principle with small tasks. I was in charge of planning and teaching the reception class Information Technology (IT). I also taught a few life skills lessons as well as standing in as the figure in charge when the teacher was not present in the class. I often looked after the children when they were playing on the field and as such I had to deal with a few challenging and demanding situations. I did organize a few physical education lessons when the teacher was unexpectedly absent.
November 2005: I was requested to assist a swimming teacher with swimming lessons for children aged 4 years to 7 years. I worked for one day per week for a month. I not only disciplined the children but also planned many lessons. I had to solely assume responsibility for on average 7 beginner children in the swimming pool and also had to spontaneously come up with creative ideas to keep the children entertained while the teacher was absent.
August 2006 and September 2008: The warden of my residence at Rhodes University offered me a job at the university’s Student Bureau (administrative branch of the university). I was responsible for the organization of the storerooms, general filing, faxing clients and helping out in application form distributions. I was also appointed to work at the front desk to deal with day-to-day requests from the students, parents, admin staff and university staff. A large amount of confidentiality was expected of me, as I was working with the entire university’s student files.
December 2006: I traveled to the United Kingdom and worked as a waitress to La Belle Époque Restaurant in Knutsford. I completely organized my own work experience to the UK for 2 months even though I am a resident of South Africa. I was responsible for waiting on tables however I did do minimal bar work as well as minimal reception work. When the manager was absent I helped in the concierge department.
2008: I was appointed Subwarden of my residence at Rhodes University. This is an extremely demanding job in the sense of managing an entire residence as well as providing extreme emotional support to the girls. This was a full time job that I did whilst completing my third year of study for my BA degree. I was in charge of house keeping issues such as ensuring the up to date maintenance of the building, weekly meetings, complete event attendance, organization of events, many administrative issues as well as full 24 hour support to 80 university girls.
2008/2009: I was appointed bar manager at the Chetwode Arms pub in Cheshire, United Kingdom. I was responsible for locking up and opening the pub, receiving and analyzing stock taking. I worked at the Chetwode Arms during my Varsity vacation of December and January before returning to South Africa to complete my Honours degree in Ergonomics.
