TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Fosse Way School – June 2010
I volunteered here over a two week period. This involved working as a teaching assistant shadowing the English coordinator. The school is a multi needs school and I was working with children aged from year 7 (11) to year 10 (14-15). Whilst there I was responsible for:
· Working with small groups on language skills;
· Vocabulary work;
· Basic story structure and writing reports;
· Functional language skills - basically getting by in life- ordering drinks in cafes, reading bus timetables, understanding money (this was a very important aspect as some of the children’s language skills are limited so it is important to teach them the basic skills so they can function in society);
· Making resources to support the teaching of lessons;
· Adapting the teaching style/resources if the pupils were struggling with accessing the lesson;
· Worked with the speech and language specialist during language groups this involved playing games to aid the pupils in remembering language rules, rhymes, spellings and pronunciations.
