Hollywood Education & Literacy Center Hollywood, CA, USA
English tutor January 2003-January 2004
During 2003, I volunteered for 10 hours a week as an English tutor at the Hollywood Education and Literacy Center in Los Angeles, California, USA. This is a non-profit organization that assists low-income children with personal English tutoring services. I was responsible for increasing the English vocabulary and reading skills of numerous students who were assigned to me. The ages of these children ranged from 10 to 16.
I issued reading/writing assignments and ensuring that these were successfully completed. I answered queries regarding proper English usage, such as spelling, punctuation and grammar. I interpreted reading material for my students and assisted them with homework assignments. I also administered exercises to improve English pronunciation as well as general diction.
Beijing Geely University EAIC Beijing, China
English/Business Law teacher September 2008-July 2009
During the summer of 2008, I took advantage of a position teaching English abroad that was offered by a colleague. This was at a private 4 year college in Beijing. This college prepares Chinese students to study abroad. Enrollment in my English classes averaged about 20 students per class. I taught three groups of students during each semester. My duties for the English classes included:
- Correcting mistakes in pronunciation, grammar and spelling
- Encouraging the use of English during class through a variety of activities, such as group discussions, debates, question and answer sessions, games etc.
- Preparing students for the IELTS spoken English examination. This is done in conjunction with an IELTS test preparation manual, which contains a wide range of discussion topics and interactive preparation schemes.
- Participating in extracurricular English activities, such as the on-campus English Corner as well as judging local English speaking competitions.
I also taught a Business Law course at this college as the college administrators evidently considered my experience with tort law sufficient to teach basic Business Law to first year Chinese college students. My primary duty was to explain the most relevant class issues in clear and simple English. I indoctrinated the students in a variety of basic legal concepts, such as:
- The division between criminal and civil law and how laws are created and interpreted
- The structure of the legal system
- The classification of business types as well as their advantages and disadvantages
- The basics of financing a business
- Contract essentials and legal remedies for breach of contract
- Tort law essentials and legal remedies
- The essentials of patents, copyrights and trademarks
In addition to the above, I also designed midterm and final examinations for my three business law classes, which I administered and graded.
