Feb 2011 – Present
Over the last year I have worked for Karden Disability Support Foundation (KDSF) as a Disability Support Coordinator. In this position I help to run various support programmes for intellectually and physically disabled clients. Within these programmes I worked directly with clients, teaching and training them to become more independent and achieve various life-goals. I also trained and managed the staff in my programmes. In this position the support was generally run on a one-to-one basis. My clients were of all ages, meaning the requirements of the different programmes were quite diverse.
Feb 2010 – Jul 2010 Worked on Radio Adelaide’s weekly ‘Y’ program as a presenter/researcher/producer. Y is a youth issues/current affairs program targeted at young adults. In this position I was expected to assist in the preparation of an hour of radio content on a weekly basis. I became quite proficient in the use of audio editing software, as well as operation radio boards during a live broadcast. This position required an extremely high level of spoken and written English, as well as the ability to speak in an engaging manner. I received some professional voice training during my time at Radio Adelaide.
Aug 2009 – Jan 2010
I worked full time for Swimming SA performing general office work. My duties included filing, data entry, receptionist duties, and a variety of other office tasks. In this position I was able to enhance my already extensive computer skills as my duties included website design and upkeep, as well as use of the Microsoft Office suite of programs. This position improved my understanding of working in a professional office environment.
Feb – July 2006
I spent 6 months teaching English to Senior High School students at the Yuxi Minorities High School in Yunnan, arranged through the organization Gap Activity Projects Australia (now called Lattitude).
I taught conversational English to 14 – 19 year old students. I independently prepared 10 classes per week. Each class consisted of 65 students and lasted 50 minutes. Skills that I developed included the ability to capture and hold their attention throughout the lesson, sense what interested them and think quickly on my feet to adjust my plans.
I was required on a weekly basis to present a report to outline the students’ progress and my lesson structure. This was followed up by feedback from the teachers which helped me improve my teaching skills. I taught for six months and travelled extensively throughout South China for the remaining three. |
