My teaching experience first began 7 years ago when I spent ten months living in Vietnam. Eight months of that time was spent teaching in Ho Chi Mihn (Saigon) city at Ho Viet My school which was at that time the largest private language institute in the country. Being only 19 at the time, this experience was both challenging and rewarding. With class sizes of up to 40 pupils it also provided a valuable lesson in group dynamics. I taught mostly children's groups between the ages of 5-16 with abilities ranging from absolute beginner up to advanced-intermediate.
I completed the TESOL certificate in the summer of 2007 and since that time have graduated with distinction from Napier University, Edinburgh with a BA in Social Anthropology. During my time at University I taught various English classes on a more informal basis to many of the international exchange students that attend University in Edinburgh.
After graduating University in May 2008 I resided in Barcelona working as an English instructor. My students consisted of professionals from various fields such as Doctors, Computer technicians and small business owners. These students motives for improving their level of English generally revolve around professional English necessities and as such my classes have been largely focused upon business English.
In Barcelona I taught both on a freelance basis and in addition through two difference business English specialization schools.
Through Comunicando I was contracted to give English classes at Accenture, one of Spain's largest technology consultancies.
I provide similar classes at Everis, which is also a large technology consultancy in Barcelona.
Through Prof-diffusion I was contracted for business English classes at Meeting y Salones which is Europes largest logistical company and runs the Barcelona trade fair, Europes second largest after Paris. They employ a large multi-lingual staff. I taught 8 staff members English on a weekly basis.
In terms of work load, through these two language companies and my freelance classes, I taught around 30 hours per week in Barcelona over the course of a year.
From April - August 2009, I resided in Seoul, Korea. During this period I was also employed as a freelance English instructor and in addition worked as a voice actor for educational recordings.
I am a semi-professional freelance English/Spanish translator and have recently completed translations for some of Korea's largest multi-national corporations such as Hyundai, POSCO and local branches of government in their tourism campaigns.
Since completing my academic studies and moving into teaching on a more full time basis I have found it to be a very positive experience and I am looking forward to expanding my student base and knowledge in this area. I am very much enjoy emersing myself in other cultures as much as possible. I am an open person, and keen to experience new things and I hope to be able to learn a great deal from any future English teaching position. |
