Objectives

I would like to find a job teaching English in China so I can engage with Chinese students and help them truly excel in the English language. I also hope to grow as a teacher and expand my understanding of Chinese language and culture. I am fascinated by Chinese culture and have done voluntary teaching in China in the past. I hope to gain more experience so I can be a better volunteer in future.

Experience in China

September 2010 – November 2010

Volunteer work/poverty relief

During this time I lived in Shaoguan county, Guangdong province, doing voluntary English teaching at the Luokeng primary and middle schools. I lived in a teacher’s dormitory in the town on my own and spent free time with the local teachers.

I belong to the ACAMU – the Australian-Chinese Association for Mutual Understanding. At the end of my time in Luokeng, some of my Australian colleagues from the ACAMU flew into China. Together, we organised donations of schoolbooks and sporting equipment with money raised in Australia to a poor middle school in Daqiao (also in Shaoguan).

December 2008

Cultural exchange/poverty relief

I accompanied an Australian businessman on visits to universities in Jiangmen and Shaoguan. I also visited Luokeng with my Australian ACAMU colleague, donating English books with money raised in Australia.

March 2008

Cultural exchange

I accompanied the ACAMU team to Shaoguan to spend time with English teachers in Luokeng and visit several universities on cultural exchange.

June 2006

Cultural exchange/poverty relief

I accompanied the ACAMU team to Guangzhou on cultural exchange visits to universities. We then visited rural schools in north Guangdong to donate schoolbooks with money raised in Australia.
