Profile
I am a dedicated and enthusiastic History graduate from the University of Southampton currently seeking employment in China.
I have an enthusiasm for all things rugby. I have been playing the game for 8 years and it is a real passion of mine. My role in the teams that I have played in demonstrates my leadership skills. I have captained school and club teams, demonstrating leadership on and off of the pitch. I have also coached two school teams, passing on my skills and experience to those younger than me. This was a sensitive situation as it involved those younger than me. It shows I have the maturity and professionalism required for this situation
It excites me to try something new. Since being at University I have played an important role in the Dodgeball team. It is a sport that I have never played before but I have enjoyed it immensely, so much so I am on the Dodgeball committee for the 2009-2010 academic year, as social secretary. I also took a massive step and decided to move to China to teach English, something that has allowed me to immerse myself into the Chinese culture whilst also gaining valuable experience and expertise.
I have been elected as History Vice-President for the 2010-2011 academic year. I run meetings with course reps and lecturers. I also resolve any issues that students may have with particular tutors or the subject as a whole. This role shows my leadership, communication and organisation skills which have been essential for the role. Similarly, I was also the campaign manager for my friend’s student’s union election campaign. This involved organisation and leadership skills, and the ability to come up with new, fresh and exciting ideas in our attempt to win.
I have been involved in numerous voluntary activities. Whilst in College I was a leader in school missions to primary schools. This involved leading a group of about five individuals of my age, as we went into schools in the local area and arranged art, games and songs. This demonstrates my level of adaptable teamwork, mentoring and communication skills, depending on the age of the children.
For my history course it is essential that I read. I have learned greatly from my history course. The number of presentations that I have produced have improved and confirmed my communication skills. One of my units was a group project. As a part of a group of 7 we had to give numerous presentations and displays based around our subject area. In this group I took on the role of the leader and organiser for group. Teamwork skills were a prerequisite for a successful group project.
In the working environment I appreciate the importance of good teamwork, punctuality and enthusiasm for any task at hand. I am keen to learn more about the key responsibilities and the team involved in this position, and would be available to interview at short notice
Education
History BA, University of Southampton 2008-2011 (degree grade – 2:1)
- This includes a skills courses aimed primarily at analytical, group and communicational skills required by historians and in most other fields of work.
- This has enhanced my ability to consider other possibilities outside the conventional. My historical interest lies more in the modern domain. I am fascinated by the political extremes of twentieth century Europe.
- Social histories also attract me, such as the history of trade unions and other labour movements of 19th century.
- My verbal and written communicational skills have been essential to my current studies. I have shown the ability to work as group in the preparation and deliverance of presentations.
- My degree also requires a vast amount of independent research and study.
- I sought to become involved with University life. I am currently a member of the Dodgeball team, the Law rugby team and I play squash socially.
